вЂњWhile full thickness or third-degree burns almost always require emergency medical attention at a specialized burn unit.вЂќ вЂњSuperficial first-degree burns can almost always be managed at home,вЂќ she explains. Lastly, fourth-degree burns would be those that extend into muscle or bone. Additionally, she adds, third-degree burns are often painless and present without any blisters.

These burns are often caused by open flames or hot metals, and the affected skin is typically less mobile. вЂњFull thickness, or third-degree burns, involve subcutaneous tissues such as fat, and will often appear with a white, gray, or black leathery-appearing eschar,вЂќ says Abadeer.

Deep partial thickness burns most often blister, but unlike superficial partial thickness burns, can appear more pale or white in color, and are occasionally less painful.

They are painful, red, and often weeping.

Superficial partial thickness burns will present with blistering within the first 24 to 36 hours of the burn.

Second-degree burns have the widest range of presentations, and symptoms may vary depending on which of the categories they fall under: Partial thickness, or second-degree burns, reach a bit deeper into the skin, involving both the epidermis and dermis, and can be split into two categories-superficial partial thickness and deep partial thickness burns. To get answers, I turned to Ann Abadeer, a physician assistant in the Burn ICU at Northwell HealthвЂ™s Staten Island University Hospital. That seems like a bad sign, I wondered to myself, but decided that on such a small area of my body I didnвЂ™t need to be too worried.ДЄ day or two later, as the wound started to appear more white-and finally sent me those pain signals IвЂ™d been waiting for-I got to thinking about burns, and just how exactly to tell when you should be concerned. The door closed and potatoes happily roasting away, I took stock of the angry red mark on my right hand and waited (and waited) for the pain to come-but it never did. As I watched my knuckle (rather predictably) hit the 375-degree element mid-flip my eyes quickly instructed my brain, which relayed the message to my hand that it should pull away as fast as it could. While attempting to flip some potatoes I decided (rather smartly) that instead of pulling the tray out, I would just stick my hand in the oven to do it instead. That is until a recent encounter with my oven. And though, as an admittedly clumsy individual, IвЂ™ve suffered my fair share of burns throughout the years, the pain somehow always seems just as fresh and unexpected each time. It reads like a list of bad вЂњmost wantedвЂќ posters for crimes against my skin: Hair straighteners, curling irons, the sun, hot cooking oil, oven elements, and steam.
